About Playing the Man

These playful and humorous images are a celebration of football and a wistful look at the past. Referencing bubble gum footy cards from the 1970’s and 80’s (and press images, including Rennie Ellis's iconic image of Robbie McGhie), Miller recreates himself as boyhood football heroes to explore issues of masculinity, identity and cultural difference.

What we do at Man UP?

~ Male Culture ~

Focusing on talking to boys about building good language & attitudes around their mates, addressing the stereotypes of masculinity in the past and how this has developed over time, and breaking down the myths around pornography.

~ Male Relationships ~

Focusing on talking to boys about the value of relationships, how to identify healthy unhealthy relationships and how to foster and nurture positive relationships moving into the future.

~ Male Coping ~

Focusing on breaking down the stigmas around male mental health, encouraging the use of healthy coping mechanisms, and showing boys how to support their mates when going through periods of being mentally unhealthy.

About Man UP

MAN UP is a not-for-profit, peer-to-peer education service in WA, with the goal of empowering young men and redefining masculinity. We run workshops on various topics centred around men's mental health and well-being, with an emphasis on transforming boys into confident, purpose-driven, and emotionally capable young men.

Our aim is to change the phase 'man up' to mean something positive; to live authentically from one's heart, embrace vulnerability, and hold one another accountable to stand up for what's right.
