WAnt: contemporary jewellery from WA and the companion exhibition The Mentors present a diverse and exciting range of contemporary jewellery from some of the finest practitioners in Western Australia, many of whom regularly show overseas. They showcase an exciting range of works by members of the Jewellers & Metalsmiths Group of Australia (WA); Max Ball, Fatemeh Boroujeni, Barbara Cotter, Jenny Crisp, Alexandra d’Ulisse, Blandine Hallé, Annika Hauschild, Elizabeth Hawkley, Bethamy Linton, Betty McKeough, Jill Parnell, Sultana Shamshi, Jacquie Sprogoe, Katrina Virgona, Alister Yiap and Lynndy Young and their mentors Dorothy Erickson, Brenda Ridgewell and Christel van der Laan.
The juried WAnt exhibition was curated by Dorothy Erickson and Brenda Ridgewell who selected a diverse group of jewellers drawn from all points of the globe and at various stages of their careers making an exciting meld as the participants’ various ethnic backgrounds and life journeys enrich the work. A common denominator for most of these artists is that jewellery has been a second career individually embraced when the opportunity presented.
The curators chose artists whose work showed a certain maturity, individuality and vision. However because some people selected were at very early stages of their jewellery career Christel van der Laan was invited to join in mentoring the group to produce new work for the exhibition. The resulting displays are a celebration of design and craftsmanship, featuring traditional and contemporary goldsmithing through to textile techniques, found objects and CAD design and using materials ranging from gold and silver through steel and vitreous enamel to felt and silicone. During the project various members have been invited to be part of exhibitions in Australia, USA, Britain and Europe whilst others have been chosen to feature in books published in Europe, USA and Australia.
